Travel to Latvia

with me!

Join us 7-12 August!

Latvia!? How much do you know about it? (Bonus points if you can show it on the map).

During the last few years, I have traveled over 60 different countries and met an insane amount of people who were incredibly curious and interested to learn more about my country. I think my home country is incredible, we have absolutely unique and stunning places that you cannot see anywhere else in the world, nature here made me fall in love with travel.

The reality is that often people who come to Latvia usually spend a couple of days in the capital, drinking and clubbing and leave without seeing much of the country. I think Latvia is so much more than that, first of all, the magic of Latvia is in its forests, windy Baltic sea, sandy dunes, mysterious bogs, authentic people, natural food, foraging for berries and mushrooms, stories by the campfire, shots of weird herbal drinks and so much more.

For the last few years every time I come back home, I host my foreign friends to show them my home country the way I see it, to show the most adventurous, interesting and unique places that you would never be able to see yourself without knowing someone local. I was always dreaming about getting some likeminded people together and going out on an adventure.

Thanks to my family and friends back home, who helped me to put together an itinerary and arrange all the things and activities, it is finally possible!

I have 6 spots for the trip of a lifetime! For 5 nights we will be exploring Latvia, camping, adventuring through bogs, sandy dunes, small less explored cities, feeling the nature and falling in love with my home country together! Who is up for joining!?

itinerary:

day 1.

We start the day early in the morning by meeting in Riga city center.  From Riga we hop into our comfortable minibus and head towards Kemeri National Park which is about 1-hour drive, this is where we start our adventure. Most tourists rarely venture out this far, but this is one of my fav places in the whole country. The wildlife reserve and National Park at Ķemeri is one of Latvia’s most impressive natural treasures. Its ancient raised bogs, swamps, forests and lakes were created roughly 8,000 years ago when the sea retreated to its current position.

I will tell you all about rare birds like the black stork not to mention moose, deer, elk, foxes, wolves and wild cattle and horses that were reintroduced into this unique ecosystem with some help from the World Wildlife Fund.

Here we will take a guided tour through the bog wearing super special swamp shoes that will allow us to walk on the surface and get closer to this natural phenomenon than anyone. Our local guide Kristaps- is studying at the Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences of the University of Latvia and knows everything about this area.

During this day we will do 3 different hikes (easy ones) eat some delicious local food, learn about the area, visit local fisherman village to learn how local people live and fish. I will also help you to take an insane amount of pictures that will blow your friend's minds!

day 2.

We start the day by truly felling Latvia. One of the kind natural walk situated in the Kemeri National parks takes through the beautiful peaceful forest, we will be walking barefoot through pebbles, olives pits, boulders and millstones, moss, cones, seashore sand, Kemeri healing mud, Pranamat lotus flowers, reeds, chips, rough pine trunk, clay, refreshing river water, spruce and the gravel, while listening to birds chirping and feeling summer warm breeze on your cheeks.

This walk is created to:

* strengthen your immune system and give you energy

* stimulate blood circulation, which is good for your heart,

* strengthen leg muscles, ligaments, and joints,

* reduce cramps in calf muscles,

* normalize blood pressure,

* reduce headaches,

* release tiredness from your legs,

*help to keep your inner balance and stability, both physical and psychological,

* relax and calms down your mind and heart, so they are open to new ideas,

* gently activate nerve endings on the soles of your feet, which can favorably affect the entire body.

After feeling all energized and ready for the day we continue our adventure to one of the most beautiful Latvian lakes- Engure. The Lake Engure is the largest coastal lake in Latvia. It stretches 6 km in length and reaches a maximum depth of 2 - 3 meters. We will admire the lake scenery from the observation towers located in the Ornithology Centre with the chance to sport several local birds. In the area, we would also be able to see some wild grazing cows and horses.

We will finish at one of my favorite camping spots. We will enjoy some activities like kayaking, beach volleyball, BBQ and traditional Latvian sauna, will prepare food on the campfire!

This unique place offers tiny barrel houses overlooking the Baltic sea. I am already dreaming about waking up by the beach with the sunrise, are you?

day 3.

We will kick the day off with some morning activities like yoga and SUP right on the beach, enjoying the beautiful Baltic sea.

After breakfast we will continue our adventure.

We will firstly visit Cape Kolka- where the waves from two seas clash – the open Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. We will visit Cape Kolka Pine Trail and climb the Cape Kolka observation tower. During Soviet times the entire peninsula was zoned off as a high-security military base, strictly out of bounds to civilians. The region’s development was subsequently stunted and today the string of desolate coastal villages has a distinctly anachronistic feel – as though they’ve been locked away in a time capsule.

We will continue visiting another place that used to be forbidden to visit. The world’s eighth-largest radio telescope.

The purpose of the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center is to carry out fundamental research in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, as well as applied research in space technology. The parabolic antennas are used for observation of inter-star environments, the Sun, asteroids and other objects flying near Earth, including space debris, as well as objects outside the solar system. Here we will tour around the observation center, learn more about space and astronomy.

Stop for lunch in Kuldiga - nicknamed "the Venice of the North,". Kuldiga is an endearing blend of flowing water and historic buildings on the candidate list for UNESCO world heritage listing. It is quite unlike any place in the country, and an absolute must for those wanting to explore Latvia beyond Riga.

We will spend a night in another traditional Latvian house where we will, of course, have another sauna experience along with local wine tasting, because that’s what you have to do in Latvia.

day 4.

We will start the day by visiting some of the agricultural farms in Latvia. Latvians are really famous for its honey and hemp and here we will learn everything about the process, meet farmers, try local goods and enjoy nature one more time.

Of course, we just have to explore the third biggest city in Latvia- Liepaja- the city of the wind. It is a proud port city with an artistic soul, pristine Blue Flag beach, market stalls offering fresh local fish and the local specialty cod dish Liepājas menciņi on every menu, Liepaja is a place with the sea running through its veins.

The visit would be complete without visiting one of the most unique tourist attractions in the country. Karosta Prison- Soviet prison will take you back in time with the authentic atmosphere and the fascinating stories of the site, featuring authentic items from war and from the prison. The guides on the site (dressed as prison officers) are very friendly and informative but can seem like real prison guards (it is all about what kind of experience you are looking for :)) During Soviet times, Karosta was made a secret territory and was closed to the public. Today Karosta is a spectacular, paradoxical and unique site in the world’s history and architecture reflecting the interaction of Tsarist Russia military elegance and robust Soviet militarism. You may like or dislike it, but Karosta certainly won’t leave you indifferent.

We will finish the day by seeing the sunset from one of the most stunning places in the whole country! Crumbling away on the edge of the Latvian coast, a row of abandoned concrete bunkers have formed a lovely line of ruins that harken back to a fort built by Tzarist Russia. When they were created, the ruins encircled the entire city of Liepaja. The Northern Forts were part of Liepaja’s central fortress and they were built between the 19th and 20th century to provide shelter to the naval base. A line of outer fortifications surrounded the whole city.

day 5.

If weather will be kind to us, we will start the day by feeling like kids again by jumping at the water trampolines and inflatable platforms, swimming around in the water and just having tons of fun in the wake park, wakeboarding is possible as well.

We will make our way back to Riga where we will explore the capital. We will show some of our favorite spots for photography, cutes cafes, local architecture and make you fall in love with the city that we both love with our hearts.

Here we will also have our last dinner together in a traditional restaurant where we will be able to try some local beer and of course Black Balsams- you just cannot leave the country without trying!

tips for travelers.

We start our trip in the morning on the 7th of August, so you need to arrive on the 6th the latest to have no problem to meet the group in the morning the next day. We suggest coming even earlier to explore Riga more if you do please let us know and we will be very happy to show you around the town and hang out altogether with the people who decide to join earlier.

This trip is very nature oriented. We will be out most of the time, hiking, exploring, meeting up with locals. Please bring comfortable shoes and clothes, sunscreen and mosquito repellant. You need to be willing to travel with the group and be fine to share communal spaces together with the travelers. Accommodations are basic but unique, on some days travelers get their own private room on some days have to share rooms with other travelers with toilets and showers outside the premises.

The weather can be unexpected, but usually, summers are hot with long days, water is perfect for swimming, forests are filled with berries and gardens are full of seasonal fruits and veggies

We, of course, we will do our best to be responsible and eco-friendly travelers and I will personally share with you the tips that help me to travel these places and create positive change through my travels.

Lastly, we tried really really hard to make this trip really affordable. We tried to get our friends and family members involved to help with all the organizing and thanks to that it was possible to make it almost twice cheaper than anyone would ever offer.

We will be traveling by a comfortable minibus and the group will be 9 people. 1 driver, me, my friend and local expert Juliana and 6 of you guys! I cannot wait to meet you all and travel together.

Before proceeding to book the trip we want to know more from you, so send me a dm on insta! I will tell you more about this trip and how you can join!

marga

Sustainability activists, animal conservationist, photographer, motivational speaker, social media influencer...I can put a lot of cool things next to my name, but I guess for this trip the most important thing is that I want to show you my country the way I see it, make you fall in love with something that made me fall in love with nature, our planet, our animals. I want to make you more adventurous, I want you to learn from nature and respect it and show how people here do it.

I love meeting people and showing them around my country. In the last years, I and my family hosted a countless number of travelers.

juliana

Literally, noone would be better for the trip than Juliana. We have been friends for over 15 years and explored countless places together. Juliana has a blog about traveling around Baltic states. She explores Latvia and surroundings in order to find the most unusual, interesting and adventurous places to visit and stay at. She is a true local travel expert, incredibly fun and adventurous person and knows more about traveling around Latvia than anyone! She is a living example that traveling doesn't mean going too far away from expensive places, traveling is within you and it is important to get our and explore our own backyards.
